OCCoE Research Seminar with PSU's John Acken

Digital Computer Architecture Hardware support for Information Security

Information Security requires a system wide solution. The security solution must include software, policy, cultural, and hardware components. The key in security is that the system is no stronger than the weakest point. This talk will cover some current research into Computer Architecture Hardware ideas that support system wide security solutions. Some general security information presented includes the traditional information security triad of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. Some example problems for each of these categories are described along with associated hardware components that support the solutions. When it comes to security solutions, there are two major categories of solutions: prevention and observation. Examples of prevention include encryption and access control.  Examples of observation include attack detection and trust modelling. The open research question for hardware security design is “What is the metric for Security?”
