Cybersecurity for the Public Good: The Role of University Cyber Clinics
As cyber threats become a growing concern for small businesses, nonprofits, and local government entities, universities are now recognized as key players in contributing to the nation's cyber resilience. The presentation will unveil the rapidly emerging concept of university-based cybersecurity clinics, which are student-led programs under the supervision of faculty that provide free cybersecurity risk assessments, training, and awareness services to under-resourced community organizations. Dr. Praveen Guraja, who draws from his personal experience in the establishment of the Oregon Tech Cybersecurity Community Clinic (OTC³), the first clinic in the state of Oregon to become a member of the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics (a joint initiative of UC Berkeley and MIT with Google's support), will share insights on how the universities can combine experiential cybersecurity learning with public service. The webinar will highlight the various advantages that come with this model, including the development of ethical, job-ready professionals, reinforcing community defense, and reducing the ever-widening difference in cybersecurity talent and capacity. Attendees will learn how university cyber clinics can create a sustainable impact on both workforce development and regional digital safety.
